The Independent Birmingham Festival is like a foodie’s Christmas. Independent food brands, delicious things to eat, gorgeous drinks and a whole host of incredible local traders in the market hall.
Six months ago, I’d have told you I didn’t really like beer, but thanks to a few awesome beer events, I’m learning I actually do like it. One of my discoveries that I love is an Ice Cream Pale. This is one is from Burning Soul Brewery. It’s sweet without being sickly, and is perfect summer drinking. I’m a big fan of their Raspberry Ripple Milkshake Pale, and their Cherry Sour too.
I love a cocktail from 1881, and tried the Rhubarb and Rosehip Spritz. Sweet, delicate flavoured and very refreshing.
The Yuzu Slushy from The Vanguard was one of my highlights from the day. This gorgeous iced cocktail uses gin, mead, yuzu and apple. It’s sharp and refreshing, and a little unusual, which I love. More mead based cocktails magic, please!
Pork belly is one of my favourite foods, especially when it’s cooked by Low ‘N’ Slow. The pork just melted, and was packed with incredible smoked flavour. Served with potatoes and kimchi, this was my standout dish. I’m so ready for Andy’s restaurant to open!
Laghi’s Deli is king of pizza. This little beauty is the South Of Italy. It’s a white based pizza, with that perfect blistering of the dough, topped with mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes and nduja sausage. There was some real kick from the nduja, balanced with oily richness from the tomatoes. Perfect pizza.
I had a stunning Old Fashioned from the Whisky Club. I love an Old Fashioned, and this one hit the spot very nicely, with good whisky and a nice dash of orange.
Choosing a favourite Birmingham burger is like asking a mother to choose her favourite child. The offering from Patty Freaks is a top contender though. The beef patty is piled with bacon, cheese, pickles, ketchup, american mustard, freaky mayo, lettuce and pickled onions. Spectacular.
The Gold Bar from Urban Cheesecake, finished us off for the day. This throwback to a classic chocolate bar is bloody gorgeous, but you’ll need a sweet tooth to eat it all!
