Sunday Lunch at the Edwardian Tearooms, Birmingham

Going for a roast dinner in a museum might not seem like an obvious choice, but you can do just that at the Edwardian Tearooms in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. I’ve written about the gorgeous tearoom before, when they added their Press for Champagne buttons, but I’ve never actually eaten there.

the roast

You can bag yourself two roast dinners for £20, which is an absolute bargain. The menu changes seasonally, but at the moment, you can choose between beef, pork or a mushroom wellington.

Sunday Roast

I opted for the beef, and was amazed by the sheer size of the lunch that arrived. The Yorkshire pudding was one of the biggest I have ever seen. Size didn’t mean a taste compromise though, as it was light and fluffy.

The beef, unfortunately, wasn’t good. I like my meat pink, but the centre of this was almost raw, and the whole cut was incredibly fatty. I really struggled to get a knife through it, and after a few mouthfuls gave up. Beef quality seemed to be luck; others at the table had the same issue I did, whereas some happily demolished theirs with no issues. The pork looked much better, as the did the veggie option, so I think I’d avoid the beef.

Everything else excellent though. Roast potatoes were fluffy inside and crisp outside. The veg still had some bite, and the cauliflower cheese was a gooey delight. The gravy too was rich, and thick.

the dessert

Sticky Toffee Pudding

For dessert, I had the Sticky Toffee Pudding. It was a good size, and almost gingery in taste. It was pleasingly squidgey and an excellent cold weather pudding. I’m not big on custard in general, but I thought it was a shame that the custard is bought in (I’m fairly sure it’s Bird’s Custard) instead of making a fresh one to go with the home-made pudding.

The verdict

The 2 for £20 is a bargain, undeniably, but the quality does seem to be hit and miss. Dodge the beef, and you’ll have an enormous, tasty lunch for a good price.
