When you live with a Northerner, you soon come to understand the importance of a good pie. At a loose end and hungry in the city centre the other night, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Pieminister.

The restaurant is very hipster cool, with cool lights, exposed brick walls and lots of booth seating. We claimed the booth by the window, ideal for some blogger lighting.

Gone with the Gin

We both chose the mocktail version of the Gone with the Gin, which is ginger beer and other things I have forgotten, but it was very tasty. The ginger gave heat without being too fiery and it was the perfect cool, refreshing drink for a summer evening.

The Matador

Dave ordered the Matador which a is beef steak, chorizo, butter bean and olive pie. He opted for the  Mothership option which comes with mash, minty mushy peas, cheese and crispy shallots. I had the classic deal, which is a pie, mash and gravy. For my pie, I chose the Deer Stalker, which is venison, bacon, red wine and lentils. We also ordered a side of Pigs in Blankets to share.

Both pies were huge, and the pastry is the proper stuff, thick and sturdy. My token northerner was delighted by the thick onion gravy and his pie vanished in record time, and was proclaimed a success.

The Deer Stalker was so full of meat, often a rarity for a more unusual choice like venison. The meat was rich and I could really taste the red wine. The mash was creamy, and the pigs in blankets were gorgeous, with a good lashing of mustard.

All in all, we were very impressed. The food was excellent, the service fast and friendly and the venue cool. My only critique would be the tin plates. They looked good, but I found they were really slidey on top of the wooden boards everything was served on, and putting the plate on the table top didn’t help much. I was slightly in fear of tipping my pie into my lap if I cut into too enthusiastically. I will admit to being a general hater of things served on a board because I know what a git they can be to carry to the table, and I feel bad for the serving staff.

Aside from that, I can’t fault our experience. We’ll be back.
